Mary Njeri Karanu [Kenya] is a senior program officer at Rural Outreach Africa. Her work involves community education, mobilizing civil society actors, and facilitating advocacy and social accountability actions for the right to food. She has 13 years of experience working with communities, policymakers, and leaders at all levels for a more just and equitable world. She advocates for sustainable and inclusive food systems, improved social protection, gender equity, and social justice. Njeri convenes the Right to Food Coalition in Kenya, an alliance of 40 CSOs advocating for improved access to healthy and culturally appropriate food through policy, legislation, and stakeholder collaboration. She is the assistant editor-in-chief at the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition, and Development (AJFAND) where she writes about the right to food and nutrition, environment, agriculture, and socioeconomic issues affecting food access in Kenya and Africa. She has made presentations in national and international forums on inclusive governance for food systems transformation, most recently in Rome at the UNFSS 2023 Stocktaking Moment where she highlighted the importance of prioritizing the needs and concerns of the most affected and engaging them in policy processes.

Njeri loves to connect the dots and is happiest when she is working in her kitchen garden.
