About the Current Lead Authors [Volume 24 No. 3 (2024)]


Dr. Mel Oluoch [Ethiopia] is the Director for Strategic Partnership at Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) where he coordinates the design and program delivery of practical and innovative agricultural extension and advisory service and capacity building systems in Africa. His work has been focused on multidisciplinary R&D disciplines that integrates agriculture and nutrition through the development and dissemination of Agriculture technologies and best practices that impacts rural and urban communities in Africa. He has previously held R&D and leadership roles at the World Vegetable Center, IITA, HarvestPlus, CIAT, and Wageningen Plant Research, The Netherlands. He holds a PhD in Horticulture from Virginia Tech (USA), an MSc in Horticulture from Central Mindanao University (Philippines), and a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (Kenya).

[1] Dr. Jeff Mutimba [Zimbabwe] A native of Zimbabwe, is a seasoned Agricultural Extensionist with extensive professional experience across the field’s spectrum from frontline extension service, to teaching and capacity building at the continental level. His first international career was as Senior Training Fellow for CIAT Regional Bean Programs in Africa. His second was as Program Leader for Winrock International/Sasakawa where he initiated a B.Sc. in-service degree program for mid-career extension professionals at 12 universities in Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda. Jeff has co-authored three books on extension and published 33 papers in journals and presented 51 papers at international conferences.

[2] Dr. Oluwaseun A. Adeleke [Nigeria] was a former lecturer at the department of Agricultural Technology, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Nigeria. She currently lectures at the department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Her area of specialisation is rural sociology, gender, climate change, sustainability and rural livelihoods are among her key research interest. Dr. Adeleke has published journal articles in international peer-reviewed journal and presented research output at national and international conferences. She is a member of Agricultural Extension Society of Nigeria (AESON) and Rural Sociological Association of Nigerian (RuSAN) amongst others. She has also participated in projects sponsored by World Bank and West African Agriculture Productivity Programme (WAAPP).

[3] Dr. Innocent Mathias Busindeli [Tanzania] is a lecturer at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) of Tanzania, with expertise in agricultural extension communication, curriculum development and community engagement. He served as the Head, Department of Agricultural Extension and Community Development from 2017 to 2023. He has participated in developing various agricultural and extension-education curricula. Dr. Busindeli holds a PhD. in Agricultural Education and Extension from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Tanzania; masters of development degree in Rural Extension, Training and Transformation from Larenstein University of Professional Education, The Netherlands. He also holds B.Sc in Agricultural Education and Extension from SUA, Tanzania.

[4] Dr. Catherine Macharia-Mutie [Kenya] is a public health nutrition development professional and currently the Deputy Team Leader at Tanager in Nairobi. Catherine has managed complex nutrition and food systems programs in various sub-Saharan Africa countries. She also has extensive monitoring and evaluation experience and has published in internationally renowned peer reviewed journals. Catherine has previously held roles with international development organizations, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and Nairobi, Moi & Kenyatta Universities. She holds a PhD (Human Nutrition) from Wageningen University, Netherlands, and MSc (Applied Human Nutrition) and BA (Anthropology) from University of Nairobi, Kenya.

[5] Dr. Charles Musoke [Uganda] is a Seed System Specialist, data analyst, independent researcher, and entrepreneur. He is a PhD. finalist at the School of Agricultural Sciences, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Makerere University Kampala. He holds a master's degree in Crop Science and a Bachelor's in Agriculture both from Makerere University.

[6] Ioana Lungu [Romania] is a Romanian economist and a research consultant based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia since 2018. Prior to joining Laterite's Ethiopia office, she worked as a research consultant for the World Bank and the Austrian Foundation for Development Research, and spent two years as a junior advisor at GIZ’s African Union office, leading projects in Morocco, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Tanzania. She holds a MicroMaster degree in Data, Economics and Development Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and J-PAL, as well as a Master's degree in Economics from the Vienna University of Economics.

[7] Beatrice Zgawa Luhanga Mbakaya [Malawi] (PhD.) is a Rural Development Specialist currently employed by Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development in Malawi - M`belwa Council as Director of Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources responsible for providing strategic policy direction. She is also an AWARD policy fellow - Gender Responsive Agriculture Systems and has passion in promoting transformative development pathways for inclusive development.

[8] Samuel Mpiira [Uganda] is a District Production and Marketing Officer in Buvuma District Local Government and a PhD fellow at Maseno University School of Agriculture and Food Security Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development. He holds a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics, Postgraduate Diploma in Education and bacherlor of science in Agriculture of Makerere University, a postgraduate diploma in Business Administration of Uganda management Institute-Uganda. He has vast knowledge and experience in Agricultural Extension and Economics with over 10 peer reviewed publications. He has over 20 years of research experience in Agricultural Economics and has worked with National Banana Research Programme under the National Agricultura Research Organisation. Currently doing work on Household decision making and technology choice. My research focuses Household Decision Making its influence on Technology Choice and adoption within the Banana Farming System in Uganda.

[9] Dr. Olushola Fadairo [Nigeria] is a university lecturer, researcher, and consultant in sustainable community development, innovation scaling, project management/evaluation, and policy issues in agriculture. Academically, Olushola holds a PhD. degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the African Climate and Development Initiative, University of Cape Town, South Africa in 2016. He is a fellow of the United Nations University-Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (UNU-ESDA). He served as a consultant to Sasakawa Africa Association-Nigeria in evaluating its extension service delivery under the commodity association traders/trainers project.

[10] Yann Christie Sissinto Adjovi [Bénin] is Assistant Professor in Biochemistry and molecular Biology applied to food safety at the School of Food processing and agricultural products storage of National University of Agriculture and head of Laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She worked on antimicrobial properties of plants extract but focused on food safety particularly on fungi genome, resistance of crops to aflatoxins and alternatives methods against mycotoxins. She is author and co-author of many publications and member of scientific organizations such as the national academy of young scientists of Benin.

[11] Effiong John [Nigeria] is an administrator, researcher, public analyst and community mobilizer. He is a certified rural sociology and development expert with a goal to contribute to rural development, well-being, growth, nutrition, agriculture and health of people around him. Dr Effiong’s research areas are Livelihoods, Food Security, Rural Development, Agriculture, Gender Studies, Models and Extension services. He is a member of many Professional associations namely; Agricultural Society of Nigeria, Farm Management Association of Nigeria, Agricultural Extension Society of Nigeria, Rural Sociology Association of Nigeria and Environmental Society of Nigeria.

[12] Dr. Anjolaoluwa Ore Fadairo [Nigeria] PhD (Agricultural Extension and Rural Development) is the Technical Coordinator for capacity building in Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA)-Nigeria. She coordinates the professional upgrading of in-service extension workers in 13 higher institutions across Nigeria, Ghana, and Sierra Leone. She was a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife before joining SAA. She received the Netherlands Fellowship Award for Entrepreneurship in 2014 and is a member of the Agricultural Extension Society of Nigeria (AESON), West Africa Research and Innovation Management Association (WARIMA) amongst others. She has published in local and foreign journals.

[13] Harue Kitajima [Japan] is a Senior Advisor specializing in agricultural extension for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Tokyo, Japan. She holds a MPS in International Agriculture and Rural Development from Cornell University, USA and BA in Agricultural Science from Tokyo University of Agriculture, Japan. She has more than 10 years of experience working as an expert on JICA’s technical cooperation projects aimed at improving the livelihoods of small-scale farmers. Drawing on this experience, she is currently providing advice on JICA’s cooperation strategies, policies, and various projects in the field of agriculture and rural development mainly in the African region.

Holds a master’s degree in project management from Jomo Kenyatta University and is pursuing a PhD. in Economic and Rural Development at the University of Liège, Belgium. Passionate about fostering positive change, his expertise lies in agriculture, resilience in humanitarian contexts, and cooperatives. With extensive experience in humanitarian settings across the DRC, Central African Republic, Mali, and Niger.
