Subject: Wangari Maathai
Thanks, Ruth. The dedication of AJFAND Volume 11 No.5 (2011) to Wangari Maathai is apt. She was an evironmental colossus; an extraordinary person who saw far ahead of her time. Her passing is indeed painful. It will however compel the continent to rethink its commitment to sustainable development (economic and social development that preserves our environment). How do we move forward?
- A Wangari Maathai Trust Fund/Foundation on Environmental Sustainability
- An African Union or UNEP Wangari Maathai Annual Prize on Conservation and Biodiversity
- A Book on her contribitions, achievements and challenges
- A Wangari Maathai Chair in Sustainable Development in one of Kenya's Universities
Kenya's Environment and Agriculture ministers who will be in Addis Ababa for the ministerial preparatory meeting for the Rio+20 UN Conference on Environmental Development should take some of these up with the African Union. I prepared and will be presenting the Africa Review Report on 20 years of sustainable economic, social and environmental development in Africa (1992-2012) for the ministers to deliberate on and then for the Heads of State and Government to decide on in January 2012, before the continent heads for Rio de Janeiro on 4-6 June 2012 for the world summit.
We can work togther with other stakeholders on the above proposals.
Cheers and God bless.

Dear Ruth,
Indeed what a loss! You do express so well what so many of us feel. An incredible example to follow. When you look back at what she did, why she did it, and how, it looks so obvious, so simple. And behind, what do you have which so few have, the capacity to identify a problem, an idea on how to concretely tackle it, a fighting spirit, and a profound humanity. What Norman Borlaug had to. In that sense they were very much sister and brother.
Wangari Maathai attended the 1988 Workshop in Nairobi. I will always remember her at a particular moment. President Carter was sitting at a small dinner table, with two chairs empty on both side. We waited for probably more than one hour, and then Wangari Maathai arrived beautifully dressed, and only said: I am sorry. There was not water home. I had to fetch water for my kids. And then started a very animated discussion. On the other side, Victoria Sekitoleko had also joined the table. What an evening we had! Yes we will remember her.
Thanks Ruth

Dear Hon Prof Oniang'o,
I join you in mourning Wangari. What a loss! I interacted with her during 1980s and 90s in the environment movement in Kenya. She was an inspiration. Later we met in Arusha on many occasions when she was Assistant Minister. What a brave woman! What a fighter for the environment and the underdogs! What a lover of humanity! Thank you for the beautiful photo of her under that big tree! She will forever live in our memories.
Let her soul RIP. Be blessed. Edward

Dear Ruth,
Thank you very much for your message which captures the true essence of OUR Wangari and her selfless service to humanity.
She is a symbol of action over inaction, wisdom and service over ineptitude, and hope over disdain and hopelessness. She could have taken other worldly 'lucrative' options but she chose to serve and in so doing, raised the bar of excellence, morality, compassion, humility and selflessness. And like that big indigenous tree, she towered above her challenges and emerged victorious to the admiration of people across lands and seas. In doing so, she epitomises that African spirit of vivacity and courage.
In so many ways, she has singularly demonstrated that solutions to the myriad of problems and challenges facing humankind lie not only in the domain of any particular race, gender, colour or creed. She has demonstrated that Africa and we Africans have the solution to our challenges and the challenges of the world at large. Her legacy is a source of both pride and exhilaration to Kenya, Africa and the World.
We thank God for blessing us and enriching us with this SPECIAL daughter of Africa and the World. Let us celebrate her life and vow to continue her fight through our wide ranging professions and disciplines as call to duty. Let us continue to plant trees and innovative ideas and water them to sequester the pollutants in our environment as well as bear good fruit to feed and nurture our current and future generations, sustainably. This would make Wangari proud as she rests in peace!!
My heart is with our beloved family and the people of Kenya during this difficult period of loss.
Her spirit and vision leave on!!

Subject: Mourning the loss of Wangari Maathai
Dear partners, friends and colleagues,
With all of you we are mourning the loss of a great activist, politician and true visionary - an inspiration to everyone whose life she touched.
On the sad occasion of the passing away of Professor Wangari Maathai, Africa's first Green politician, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Winner of the Petra Kelly Prize of the Heinrich Boell Foundation, the Executive Board of the Foundation Barbara Unmuessig and Ralf Fuecks are sending a message of condolences: "We are mourning the loss of Wangari Maathai who passed away last night in Nairobi. With her we are losing an extraordinary and courageous woman who successfully devoted her life to the struggle for democracy, ecological sustainability, women and human rights. With her charismatic personality and her unwavering personal dedication she has made tremendous achievements and an indelible impact.
In the past, Wangari Maathai has suffered imprisonment, repression and abuse. But nothing could stop her or compromise her ideals. Beyond the ecology movement, she joined the struggle for democratic and social rights of citizens and has been one of the most famous international ambassadors for African women. For this she rightly received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2004.
With Wangari Maathai's passing we are losing a close partner and friend."
In 2004, Wangari Maathai received the international Petra Kelly Prize of the Heinrich Boell Foundation for her unique role in African politics, dedication to the green movement in Africa and her lifetime achievements.
With deep sympathy to the family,

Subject: Tribute to Wangari Maathai
Wangari MaathaiWOCAN members and staff the world over today mourn the loss of Dr. Wangari Maathai, a leader in the truest sense of the word. Wangari was an innovator and pioneer, who over 30 years ago had a vision of planting trees to both mitigate environmental damage while giving women and girls increased access to vital resources of trees and forests for their fuel wood, health and livelihoods. Her legacy extends beyond the 40 million trees planted by the Greenbelt Movement, to include the hundreds of thousands of women and men across Africa and the globe, who were inspired by her acts of peace building and tree planting.
In 2004, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote sustainable development, democracy and peace. She was the first woman from the continent to win the prize. She was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree. In December 2002, she was elected to Kenya's parliament with an overwhelming 98% of the vote. She was honored by Time magazine in 2005 as one of 100 most influential people in the world, and Forbes listed her as one of 100 most powerful women in the world.
We knew her simply as a woman scientist, whose intolerance for injustice led her to a lifetime of struggle and leadership for the rights of poor rural women and men to combat desertification, deforestation, water crises, and rural hunger. She will be dearly missed.
Sincerely,
Jeannette D. Gurung, PhD

Prof,
I am in agreement. It is one of those things we never know how to deal with. Prof Wangari leaves a legacy that all and sundry but especially women in Africa need to keep building on. We can refuse to be cowed by the powers to be and stand firm for democracy and environmental conservation. If all Kenyans young and old can be asked to plant at least two trees in their homes and villages on the day of Wangari's burial i think that would be a beffiting send off.

Nice to hear from you and I share absolutely your great sense of loss on Wangari's passing. I met her a number of times at events like the Clinton Global Initiative. The first time I met her I had just sat down beside her at breakfast and she asked me what I did and I told her about Concern's work. I then asked her what she did- I had not recognised her even though she had won the Nobel Prize the previous year: 'Well, I plant trees', she replied.
She was indeed a wonderful person and is a great loss. It is lucky that Kenya continues to have some other wonderful ambassadors like yourself but her loss is a great one.

You are quite right, my sister, and we all are mourning the loss of our leader/heroine/sister. In her spirit, we ALL must become courageous champions – and YOU are one of my heroes . . . in Wangari's image!

Dear Ruth,
It is indeed a great loss to the world and to African women in particular. I join you and all the women who knew and loved Wangari in wishing her family well and calling for her to rest on peace.

Dear Prof Oniang'o,
Please accept my condolence on this great loss. I was attending a Women's Leadership course in Tanzania when we heard of the sad news. Coincidentally, we had discussed Wangari at length two days before she passed on, drawing a lot of inspiration from her as a leader. We were truly shocked at the news. She has left a legacy behind, in this we can celebrate her life and times!
Best Regards,

Honourable,
This is truly a big loss. She did all she could within the time limit. Let us live to remember her excellent sacrifices and contributions. Let us truly honour her. May the Good Lord rest her Soul in Eternal Peace.
